Guest:

Don Smith, 6th District Commander was the guest speaker of the evening. Don is from Pine River, Post 613. He is on a mission to visit every post in the 6th District, and get to each of their meetings. So far he has made 38 posts out of the 72 in the District. He stated our Post’s goal for membership is 115, we currently stand at 87. Cmdr Don, gave a few ideas on how to recruit new members to our Post. One method, used in Bemidji, is to get with the other Veteran Organizations and set up a room at SCSU (St. Cloud State University). This way any Vet, going to school, would know where to come for help and possibly join the organizations.
Don also related stories of his travels on Veterans Day and how the general public’s attitude towards Veterans has changed. The Cmdrs Project, for his year, is to fix one of the seven buildings at Legionville. Legionville is the ONLY place in the world that trains Safety Patrols. It is located on Long Lake. Instead of demolishing the building, Cmdr Don wants to fix it up. He requested a donation. He feels small donations from each post could go a long way in keeping Legionville alive and well.
Cmdr Don also mentioned the “MOVING WALL”, a replica of the Viet Nam Memorial, will be in Cosby, MN on 22 July thru the 26th, 2010.
